Marcy, Eat My Dust... |
Monday 30th November 2009
Day 9 - Lake Naivasha to Voi With just one day remaining on the 2009 Kenya Airways East African Safari Classic Rally, Kick Energy driver Steve Perez has consolidated his third place as he looks to bring the historic-specification Datsun 260Z that he is sharing with Staffan Parmander on the podium. Today's first stage headed into Nairobi and the Chesterfield driver reported few problems and stage two to the south saw Perez second fastest as one of his main rivals, Gerard Marcy, dropped time with a puncture. Stage three via Emali saw Perez take further time out of his rival meaning he had an advantage of around 25 minutes over fourth placed Marcy going into tomorrow's short final stage which finishes in Mombasa. Said Steve: "Again we've had a day of very few problems but that wasn't the case for poor old Gerard Marcy as we saw him parked up changing a wheel on the second stage. Because I'm used to doing the honourable thing in UK rallying, whereby if anyone is faster you let them go ahead of you, the rules prohibit that on this event so it's a case of 'Marcy, eat my dust' tomorrow! But now I'm starting to hear things as every time the car makes an unusual noise, I'm crapping myself, so we just need to hold it together for one more day." Revelling in the adventure, Steve continued: "Staffan asked me at the end of a stage if I'd enjoyed the beautiful scenery and I pointed out I'd had my eyes transfixed on every rock and bump on the road, I'd had no time for such luxuries! We passed a dead cow and I nearly punctured on its horns and what's unique about this rally is that it's on public roads and you pass traffic coming the other way. It's like a big road rally with passage checks and the like and I'm going to be sad when it's all over tomorrow." Tomorrow's final leg sees the crew leave the Taita Hills Lodge near Voi at 06.00 local time (03.00 GMT) and head south east to the finish at Whitesands Hotel in Mombasa at 14.00 before the presentation at 20.00.
