After a tough time at round eight of the 2018 Formula Renault Eurocup Championship at the Nürburgring the previous weekend, it was back to Germany again for British driver Frank Bird where it proved to be a bit more productive, this time at Hockenheim for the final round of the 2018 Formula Renault Northern European Cup.
The Tech 1 Racing Team driver gave a good account of himself on Friday in the collective tests which continued into the qualifying sessions in the Paul Bird Motorsport, Be Wiser Insurance, Hager, Loco Energy Drink and Frank Bird Poultry-backed car.
The 18-year-old Cumbrian-born driver originally from Penrith set sixth fastest time in his qualifying group and was hopeful of a couple of good races. However, a spin when challenging in the leading bunch thwarted his hopes in race one but a spirited drive in race two, where he had to come from near last after being punted off early on, to claim a superb 13th place at the flag, saw him just miss out on the points.
Frank Bird: “My pace was looking quite good on Friday and I was just outside the top ten in both test sessions. Q1 was good and I qualified P6 in group and 0.2 seconds off P3. In race one, I didn’t make the best of starts and lost a few positions on the first lap but managed to pick the other drivers off lap by lap, getting up inside the top ten, then I made a small mistake and spun which was basically race over. In race two, I made a good start and made up some positions but then got hit near the end of the first lap which dropped me right the way down to 26th. After that it was a case of salvaging what I could, and I drove hard to get up to 13th at the finish. Not a bad weekend, but the results didn’t show our true pace. Thanks to all the team, my dad and our sponsors once again, I’m hoping to finish off the season in style at Barcelona in three weeks’ time.”
