The 2018 Formula Renault Northern European Cup season got underway this weekend with a double header at the iconic Pau circuit in southern France and saw Tech 1 Racing Team driver Frank Bird claim a superb top six placing.
The 18 year old originally from Penrith in Cumbria, in only his third meeting with Simon and Sarah Abadie’s Toulouse-based team in the Be Wiser Insurance, Hager, Loco Energy Drink and Frank Bird Poultry-backed car, was hoping to build on an eighth-place finish at Monza last month in the main Formula Renault Eurocup.
Despite the mixed weather conditions, Frank qualified in ninth for the opening race and despite a spin, ended up in 11th and then from eighth on the grid for race two, he battled to a sensational sixth place finish to record the best result of his single-seater career to date.
Frank Bird: “Q1 on Saturday was difficult because the track was dry although it had started to rain, but I dealt with it well to qualify in ninth. Race one was wet, and the race started behind the safety car, but we soon got going after that, and after holding ninth for much of the race, I spun and lost a lot of places but battled back to end up P11. Q2 was difficult again because the track was drying out but was still quite wet. I made the decision to go for slicks and it was a good choice as on my last lap, I put in two personal best sectors but then on the last corner I ran a bit wide and touched the wall. That lap would have put me onto row two but eighth on the grid was OK. Race two was wet again, and it went fine for me, I just had to stay out of trouble which I did and finished sixth. It was a positive weekend overall, thanks to everybody and I’m now looking forward to my home race at Silverstone next weekend.”
Indeed, Frank is back in Formula Renault Eurocup action at Silverstone next weekend where he is hoping to improve further.
