Bird Increases Lead In BTRDA Rally Series

Cumbrian rally driver Paul Bird increased his lead in the Jordan Road Surfacing BTRDA Rally Series following this weekend’s third round which comprised the Plains Rally based in Welshpool.

Along with Hexham co-driver Jack Morton in the Dom Buckley Motorsport/IRS-prepared Ford Focus WRC08, with backing from Frank Bird Poultry, Be Wiser Insurance, Hager, Fuchs Titan Race and Loco Energy Drink, Bird, from Langwathby village near Penrith, claimed a third successive podium finish to continue his great start to the season.

Despite a number of the stages in the classic Mid-Welsh forests having to be reduced in length and also a couple of long delays due to accidents, the British Superbike team boss overcame an overshoot which damaged his windscreen to take third place behind the more modern Ford Fiestas of winners Matt Edwards/Darren Garrod and runners-up Luke Francis/John Roberts.

Paul Bird:  “Whilst I’m disappointed not to win, obviously, these are more important points towards the championship. The stages were tough, and the organisers had their work cut out with a couple of issues but all credit to everyone. We had a bit of an overshoot which broke the bonnet pins and as a result the bonnet flew up and smashed the windscreen which wasn’t ideal, but all things considered, another podium is a good result. It’s my local round based in Carlisle next time out, so I’ll be going all out for victory there.”

The next round takes place with the Carlisle Stages Rally in the infamous Kielder Forest on 9th June. For further information, please visit and
